Laws

From time to time, the director of the day will give a two minute talk before the session on an aspect of the laws of bridge. Those topics will also be presented here.

There is also a reproduction of the poster on the notice board clarifying some of the more commonly misunderstood laws.

Disputed claims: If you disagree with a claim, cease play and call the director. Do not play out the hand. After listening to both sides the director will decide whether or not to allow the claim.

Mistaken explanation of a bid during the auction: When should you call the director?
1. If you later realise during the auction that you gave a wrong explanation of a bid, you must call the director immediately.
2. If your partner gave a wrong explanation of your bid you must not say or do anything to indicate what has occurred. Then, if you and partner become:
A: the declaring side: you must call the director immediately after the final pass i.e. Before the opening lead is made.
B: the defending side: you must not call the director until after play has finished.

Play or call of a card from the wrong hand by declarer:
Scenario 1 - Declarer asks dummy to play a card, when the correct lead is from his own hand: Dummy must play the card and should not give any indication that the play is from the wrong hand.
Scenario 2 - Declarer leads from his hand when the correct lead is in dummy: Dummy must not say anything to indicate that the card has been led from the wrong hand.
In both these cases it is up to the opposition to accept or refuse the lead from the wrong hand.
